This means a light meal about an hour before your workout or a heartier meal up to 3 hours before your workout. 

Food = Energy and the more energy we have for the workout, the more efficient our workout will be. Now, because different foods affect us differently, make sure to log what you eat so that you can assess which types of foods work best for you and how long before is best for you to eat.
