Here are some general tips:
Take your prenatal vitamins:
Sorry to sound like your mom or your OBGYN, but it’s true, so do it 🙂
Water:
Up your water intake even more, and make sure to get your water mostly from actual water. If you need flavor in your water, we recommend Crystal Lite Pure which is sweetened with fewer artificial sweeteners.
Tuna:
Due to potentially high levels of mercury, the recommendation is twice a week at most.
Raw fish:
Should be avoided completely due to the risk of mercury, bacteria, and other harmful parasites.
Coffee:
The general recommendation is no more than 1-2 cups a day.
Keep in mind that other foods/drinks like soda, Snapple, and chocolate items also have caffeine in them.
Sweeteners:
Stevia and Truvia are considered completely safe during pregnancy. Splenda isn’t as pure but is also considered safe in moderation. Keep in mind that some foods/drinks may also have artificial sweeteners. Some examples: Sugar-free gum and candy, low-calorie snacks, diet drinks, etc.
Exercise:
The general rule is that you can do anything you were doing before you got pregnant.
Some factors to consider:
Working your abs at this time is ineffective and can be dangerous.
You need to monitor your heart rate. Ask your doctor what the max can be and wear a monitor to track it.
You should not lay flat on your back past the first trimester as this limits oxygen flow to the baby.
You should not lift heavy weights overhead.
Take it extra easy in the first trimester in general.
These are just some general guidelines, but you should always ask your doctor.
What is the goal now?
The goal is to overall gain no more than the recommended weight gain for your body type, and of course, to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. Eating right during pregnancy will also make you less likely to develop gestational diabetes. There are many studies linking the quality of the foods the mother eats to the health and development of the baby, even as the baby progresses as a child.
When do we add food?
There is no need to add food until the second trimester. At that point, we will discuss adding more healthy foods.
How often to come in?
We recommend coming in 1-2 times a month. You’re welcome to come more often, but we’re looking at an overall picture versus week to week.
Bonus side point:
Now you have an extra reason to stay on track and care for your health!
